Emergency Boiler Breakdowns

No heating in the middle of winter? Boiler showing an error code? Gas smell? Our Gas Safe engineers are on call around the clock to diagnose and repair your boiler — most faults are fixed on the first visit.

Immediate Advice

What to Do Right Now

Before our engineer arrives, run through these quick checks — they can sometimes resolve the issue or help us diagnose it faster.

1

Check the Pressure Gauge

Most combi boilers need pressure between 1 and 1.5 bar. If it's dropped below 1, your boiler may have locked out. We can talk you through repressurising over the phone.

2

Try a Reset

Most boilers have a reset button (often marked with a flame or power icon). Press and hold for 3–5 seconds. If the boiler fires up, monitor it — recurring lockouts need investigating.

3

Check the Thermostat

Make sure your room thermostat is set above the current room temperature and that the timer/programmer is set correctly. Dead batteries in wireless stats are a common culprit.

4

If You Smell Gas

Open windows immediately, don't touch light switches or electrics, get everyone outside, and call the National Gas Emergency line on 0800 111 999. Then call us.

Why Boilers Break Down

Why Boilers Break Down

Boilers fail for a range of reasons. Knowing the symptoms helps us arrive with the right parts.

Frozen Condensate Pipe

The condensate pipe runs outside and can freeze in cold weather, causing the boiler to lock out. This is the single most common winter callout.

Pump or Fan Failure

If the internal pump or fan stops working, the boiler can't circulate water or expel flue gases safely, and it shuts down as a precaution.

Faulty Diverter Valve

This valve switches between heating and hot water. When it sticks or fails, you might have heating but no hot water — or vice versa.

PCB or Ignition Faults

The printed circuit board is the boiler's brain. Electrical faults, failed ignition leads, or flame sensor issues can all trigger error codes and lockouts.

Pressure Loss

A slow leak in the heating system causes gradual pressure loss. The boiler drops below its operating range and locks out for safety.
